The Pauline Fathers and Brothersare are religious order founded in XIII centrury Hungary by hermits. When the first monks began their communal life they chose as their patron St. Paul of Thebes. That is why the full name of the community is the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. The order spread rapidly through Hungary and in other countries. Among them was Poland, where the monks first came in 1382 to cherish and safeguard the Miraculous Image of Our Lady placed at Jasna Gora in Czestochowa. The first monastery in the United States was founded in 1955, when a small farmhouse was purchased in Doylestown PA. The farmhouse was converted into a monastery and the barn into a chapel. In 1966, a large new Shrine to Our Lady of Czestochowa was dedicated. The Monastery in Doylestown still continues to be the Motherhouse of the American Province of the Order. It is also where the Pauline monks minister to all the faithful who visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa.
