Czestochowa Day at our Shrine

The Solemnity of Our Lady of Czestochowa, principal and patronal feast of the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Doylestown, PA, took place on Sunday, August 26th. During all the Masses the faithful gathered at the Shrine, prayed through the intercession of the Holy Icon of the Blessed Mother of Czestochowa.  The main celebrations took place during the Mass at 12:30 PM. The liturgy was presided by Most Rev. Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami and a friend of the Pauline Order. There were also many other guest priests and friends of the Shrine who participated in the Holy Mass. Rev. Prof. Antoni Debinski, Rector of the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), Poland, was the homilist during the celebration.

The Feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa was also a day of the annual pilgrimage of the Polish people, under the patronage of the Polish Apostolate Committee, which is dedicated to serve the Catholics of Polish origin, living in USA. The members of this Committee have also participated in the Holy Eucharist: Most Rev. Thomas Wenski, (Archbishop of Miami and Episcopal Liaison), Rev. Canon Mirosław Krol (Chairman), Rev. Monsignor Anthony Czarnecki (Chairman Emeritus), Cecilia Glembocki, Chester Lobrow, Adriana Wos-Mysliwiec, Theresa Romanowski, Blanka Rosenstiel, Sandra Crabb Zachariasiewicz. The theme of this year's plgrimage was: "May the Polish Christian heritage, permeated by Gospel values become a source of inspiration and new evangelization".

The presentation of the special rewards took place at the end of the Mass. Rev. Canon Miroslaw Krol, Chairman of the Polish Apostolate Committee and a Chancellor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, has awarded Rev. Monsignor Anthony Czarnecki with the "Pride of Polonia Award". Msgr. Czarnecki is a Chairman Emeritus of the Polish Apostolate Committee and a current Rector of St. Joseph Basilica in Webster, MA. "The Jubilee Medal of the 100th anniversary of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin" has been given to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa and the Pauline Fathers & Brothers, by the representatives of the University: Rev. Prof. Antoni Debinski (Rector of Catholic University of Lublin) and Anna Tarnowska-Waszak (Director of the KUL's Open University). Fr. Tadeusz Lizinczyk OSPPE, Provincial of the Pauline Order in USA, has received that award in the name of the Shrine.

The celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa continued during the Solemn Vespers and the Eucharistic Procession around the Shrine at 3:30 PM. Rev. Canon Miroslaw Krol presided over the liturgy and gave a sermon about the Blessed Virgin Mary, inviting the congregation to deeper devotion to Mary and to pray the Rosary.

Czestochowa Day at our Shrine, is not only a celebration for Polish-Americans, but also for many different nationalities. The largest group of other nations coming to the Shrine, are the Haitians living in USA, who come every year to honor the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. About 300 of them participated in the Mass, celebrated in Creole at the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa.

Fr. Timothy Tarnacki OSPPE
